Home Fire Prevention

The majority of fire deaths happen in the home.  Home fire inspections provide an opportunity to inspect for fire safety issues in the home and to provide measures to improve the safety of residents living in the home. 

FOCUS Hilliard provides home fire safety inspections to residents of the Norwich Township Fire Department service area at no cost.  Firefighters will perform safety inspections consisting of a personalized home fire safety check and discussion of methods for fire protection unique to each individual property.

Smoke detectors are an essential part of a home’s fire escape plan. Do you have smoke detector batteries that need to be changed?  Firefighters will replace smoke detector batteries with owner-supplied new batteries as part of your home fire safety inspection. Below are great safety tips for smoke detectors from the National Fire Protection Association:

• Replace smoke detectors more than 10 years old
• Test all smoke detectors once a month
• Install smoke detectors on ceilings or high on a wall
• Place smoke detectors in every bedroom

Strobe detectors or bed shaker detectors are available for people hard of hearing or deaf. For more information on fire prevention, visit www.nfpa.org.
